Introduce your riders to a convenient and secure way to pay: contactless bank cards.
More than 51% of Americans are using some form of contactless payment cards. Bank cards and mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are a standard in everyday transactions. Combined with the impact of the pandemic, more and more people are turning to contactless payments than ever.
Modeshift offers a payment solution that can be adopted by riders immediately – a simple payment method they’re already familiar with. This solution is cheaper for the agency than cash handling. It’s also much better suited to the pressing need for data that agencies face today in their quest to provide better service.
This solution is called contactless EMV payments.
Using our cEMV solution agencies can decrease their exposure to cash by providing contactless bank card payments to their riders.
What is EMV?
EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) is a payment standard that allows riders to use a contactless bank card (credit, debit, e-wallet, etc.) to pay for their trips.
Using contactless (open-loop) cards, Modeshift can automatically calculate fares according to the type of trip, effectively bringing the best possible rate to every rider.
Supported by Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Discover, Apple Pay and Google Pay, EMV payments are a robust alternative to cash. EMV payments are secure and reliable and can also help reduce operational costs and cash handling.

Benefits of EMV payments
- Cash handling operations decrease with the adoption of contactless payments: drivers no longer need to handle cash (which is expensive – minimum 15c/dollar)
- Immediate adoption: riders no longer need to buy or top up smart cards or mobile apps. Riders do not have to buy any kind of ticket in advance.
- Reduced operational costs: transit agencies can reduce the expensive process of issuing and managing smart cards or tickets.
- Decreased boarding time: the process takes less than ½ second.
- Mobile phones and smart watches with Apple Pay and Google Pay are also available as EMV payment options.
